MS BONOLO MONTHE AND MR OLAYEMI AGANGA | FOUNDERS OF MAUNGO CRAFT
Maungo Craft makes Award-Winning, Preserves, Hot Sauce, Syrups and Fruit rolls that are Natural and Handcrafted. We use indigenous African foods such as Marula/Morula, Baobab and Lerotse Melon then we pair them with contemporary flavors giving you the most unique flavor profiles.

We are located in Gaborone, Botswana and our facility is HACCP Certified. We are also Fairtrade Certified and we have Won 13 Awards both locally, regionally and internationally, including being Awarded a Gold at the World Marmalades Award (UK). We have received 2 Great Taste Awards from the Guild of Fine Foods in the UK. The Great Taste Awards are like the Oscars of food. The glaring issue: We are a company on a mission. We use a fruit indigenous to Southern Africa such as the Marula Fruit. Marula Fruit is what you call an Orphan Crop. Orphan crops are underutilized in the food system. It takes approximately 300 tons of Marula fruit to get 12 tons of cosmetic marula oil. There is no major user of the Marula fruit pulp while the seed oil is a valuable global commodity. So, we asked ourselves, what happens to all that unused fruit? Save the Fruit (what we decided to do) We work with suppliers that extract marula oil from the fruit and we help SAVE THE FRUIT by UP-CYCLING it into preserves, sauce, syrups and fruit rolls thus reducing food waste. By working with them we are helping them employ around 1000 harvesters down the value chain who live in the village and are mainly women. The Marula fruit (known as Morula in Botswana) has 6 times more Vitamin C than oranges and is drought-tolerant and not water intensive, unlike avocados. Marula is 80% water. By integrating the Marula fruit into our food system, we can reduce water usage in the growing phase. Promoting Two Industries: We are also promoting the Growth of Two industries at the same time being cosmetic seed Oil & Food, so that both industries can develop and thrive instead of having the oil industry leaving a trail of waste. Post-harvest waste: Post-harvest waste is also a challenge that affects many farmers due to a lack of cold storage facilities. We buy “unloved” vegetables directly from farmers when retail stores refuse to take them because they don’t look “retail pretty”. In order to cut down even more food waste, we store pulp and fruit in our freezer to allow us to use it even when the season is done. Sustainable Food Systems: Our business model is as much about climate adaptation as it is about making high-quality foods and creating a positive impact. We package in glass because it’s recyclable and we are also recognized as UN Food Systems Champions. We are really BIG on celebrating culture through food and promoting the reintegration of orphan crops back into the food system. We believe in creating sustainable food systems. Simply put, we put culture in a bottle!

“Marula fruit pulp is underutilized. Only 12 tons of marula oil gets produced from 300 tons of fruit pulp. Marula oil is in demand globally however the fruit pulp is underutilized. To address this, we are part of a unique value chain by partnering with indigenous oil manufacturers and smallholder farmers to save and upcycle the fruit. This creates job opportunities for vulnerable communities, especially women.
